The Comedy Issue
Taken from the article
An Oral History of Comedy
Jon Favreau, writer-actor, Swingers: Swingers was sort of based on my life in many ways, although the story didn't follow my life. Characters were exaggerated versions of friends, and those friends ended up playing those roles, and we shot it in my neighborhood with my car and the clubs I used to go to. And I was getting over a relationship, though I never left five messages on a girl's machine.
It dealt with issues that I was dealing with when I first moved to Hollywood. But it's not the true story [of] what happened one weekend or something like that. There's this tremendous sense of yearning and a loneliness that goes on in Hollywood, because you have people who've left everything behind to chase a dream. Here you are with no family, a lot of times with no money, with very little to show for your efforts and bravery, and so you tend to rely on friends or look for distractions. This isn't a group of dudes who are out drinking and doing coke every night, to make that feeling go away. This is a group of friends that want to meet some girls, but basically they're just normal, earnest guys. It wasn't the dark side. It's a hopeful message because [the guys] are inspiring and supporting each other. And the funny is on the surface, but I think the thing that makes people laugh is that underneath it, there's a genuine connection and an emotional aspect to the film.
[Vince Vaughn and I] met on the set of Rudy. He had been cast out of Los Angeles off of a tape, and I had been my career was starting full-bore and I really was trying to mind my p's and q's. I was definitely coming at it with the discipline of an adult who was trying to build a career. Vince gets out there and he's like, "Where's the honky-tonk? Let's go find a good time" I always saw him as somebody who was the straw in the cocktail. You know, the cocktail stirrer. So the relationship developed between us where he was always getting me in over my head and I was the one who was sort of digging my heels in. But we both made each other laugh a great deal. It's like two musicians a little bit, because we play around each other well. If you think [somebody's] shit's funny, you get drawn into it more. And he's very, very fast. He's like a boxer who could land ten punches on me for every one I land on him, but sometimes I knock him off balance for a few.
There's a sensibility that he is able to embody in these movies, and he'll do it in day-to-day life, but it's not who he really is. He plays these womanizers, but he's not a womanizer in any sense of the word. It was more about the attitude than anything. I don't think he ever had a very difficult time meeting women, you know? And he never really put a value on what women thought of him. That's what made him successful with women. These men's magazines get it wrong, because they make it like "Here's some lines you should do" and "the game" and all this stuff, and I think anytime you put that much effort into worrying about something, it creates this gravity around it. Part of the theme of Swingersand certainly Vince's character in Swingersis, don't make a big deal out of it. Just be comfortable with who you are. Take the piss out of the situation.
Everybody who saw Swingers was like, "Where did you come up with [Vince's] character?" It was really me just writing to his voice, creating monologues of things that he either did say or would say. And I think he's cultivated that aspect of his personality and really refined it in Wedding Crashers. He hit another level with that one. |

Jeez, the whole cast is having babies!!
Jason Bateman and his wife are expecting a baby, too.
This must mean Jen and Vince are next |

I've never heard the name Brighton for a girl before, that's different.
Congrats to Jon and Joya
I wonder if Jen and Vince would be able to visit without the paparazzi catching them. |

Yeah hospitals tend not to keep you in very long anymore. So I would imagine Jen & Vince will wait to go together after everyone is home.
Congrats to Jon & Joya though.. |

The girl, Tara, who met Jennifer, also saw Jon at the Stand Up To Cancer telethon. Picture of him can be seen at her blog and here's what she had to say:
Quote: Was being very sweet and patiently waited his turn to address the press, with which he shared the fact that his mother died 30 years ago of cancer. Terrible. |
