All the info is here, just don't spam your way to 150 posts. The game section helps. |

Festival To Showcase Film Directed By Aniston
http://cbs2.com/local/local_story_225141842.html
(CBS) PALM SPRINGS, Calif. Films directed by actresses Jennifer Aniston and Bryce Dallas Howard are some of the works that will be showcased at the upcoming 2007 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films.
Organizers say 332 films, chosen from more than 2,400 entries worldwide, will be shown at the festival, slated for Aug. 23 to 29 at the Camelot Theatre. The selection of short films will be organized into 50 themed programs covering war, security issues, immigration, animation, crime, romance, the Jewish experience, gay and lesbian lifestyles and other topics. A special focus will be on films from the United Kingdom, officials said.
Some films that will be showcased feature familiar faces in front of and behind the camera. "Room 10, which stars Robin Wright Penn and Kris Kristofferson, was directed by actress Jennifer Aniston. "Orchids" is the directorial debut of actress Bryce Dallas Howard and stars Alfred Molina and Katherine Waterson, actor Sam Waterson's daughter.
Other films at the festival include "Life Happens" starring comedian Margaret Cho, "Club Soda" starring James Gandolfini and Louis Gossett, Jr., and Patrick Stewart and Joanna Lumley in the British film "The Audition."
A jury of five industry professionals will choose the winners in such categories as best animation, best documentary, best live action and best of festival, with a total of $14,000 in prize money at stake. The Panavision Grand Jury winner will receive a digital or film camera package valued at $60,000 and two days studio time courtesy of Casablanca Studios.
The festival will also present several seminars and panels comprised of industry representatives to discuss trends and provide advice on short filmmaking, organizers said.
"This year's line-up exemplifies the exciting surge of new vitality and talent emerging in the field of short filmmaking worldwide. Both official lineup and the Film Market are overflowing with smart, provocative and entertaining new work -- a testament to the huge number of exceptional young talent flooding the world of filmmaking," said festival director Darryl McDonald.
Whether this is due to the expanding number of strong film schools, cheaper access to technology or simply the influence of outlets like YouTube and iTunes, we can't know, but the results will mean a richer and more diverse future for the cinema in general."

I know that we know it's at this festival but I loved this write up.Very detailed...
Aniston to show directing skills
Aniston played Rachel Green in the US hit show Friends
Actress Jennifer Aniston is to showcase her directorial debut at a California short film festival later this month, says trade paper Hollywood Reporter.
The Friends star has directed romantic drama Room 10, which stars Robin Wright Penn and Kris Kristofferson.
Bryce Dallas Howard - recently seen in Spider-Man 3 - will also screen a film she directed, called Orchids.
The 2007 Palm Springs Festival of Short Films festival opens on 23 August and plays host to more than 350 films.
Other familiar names who will appear in some of the shorts on display include James Gandolfini in Club Soda and Patrick Stewart and Joanna Lumley in The Audition.
Room 10 is set in the emergency room of a hospital, and focuses on the true story of a nurse who discovers deeper meaning in her life after treating a dying patient.
It was co-directed by Aniston and her friend Andrea Buchanan, who was also the screenwriter.
The pair previously won a jury prize for the drama at the Cinevegas Film Festival in Las Vegas. World premieres
The Palm Springs festival, also known as Shortfest, will showcase 54 world premieres across its six-day run.
A panel of judges will hand out awards in nine categories, with two additional prizes also on offer.
The Alexis award is named in honour of Alexis Echavarria, a 16-year-old film student who died suddenly upon returning from volunteer work in Thailand just as the festival had accepted his film two years ago.
Participants will also compete to win the Hi Five to Lo Fi award for best low-budget short film.
That prize will be presented by director Jason Reitman's production company Hard C Productions.
The full line-up for the festival is due to be announced on 15 August.

To these stars, short is sweet
Name actors take chances on both sides of the camera in ShortFest fare.
THE name is longer than some of the entries. Today marks opening day of the 2007 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films & Short Film Market, also known as ShortFest. Running until Aug. 29, the fest features more than 300 shorts from 40 countries, and 50 programs with themes ranging from romance to horror.
An additional theme that runs throughout the array of offerings is that of celebrity. Apparently, short films aren't just the place where new talent can be discovered -- previously discovered talent can find a new outlet. In 23 of the selected shorts, such stars as Jennifer Aniston, Robin Wright Penn, James Gandolfini, Louis Gossett Jr., Patrick Stewart and Bryce Dallas Howard can be found both in front and behind the cameras.
So what's the appeal of starring in a film that lasts, at most, 40 minutes? Not fame or fortune, but rather camaraderie, and the chance to try something new. "I've never played a man before," said Wendie Malick, laughing, "and I'm always looking for ways to stretch however I can." In "Waiting for Yvette," she plays a transsexual about to go under the knife.
Jane Lynch appears in two shorts at the fest, including "Love Is Love," directed by her friend Anne Renton, and "The Frank Anderson." "It's kind of like back to the day where you just went out and did something just to see how it felt, to exercise a different muscle," said Lynch ("The 40 Year-Old Virgin"). "So that's why I love them."
When branching out into directing, actors have enviable casting options, thanks to friendships they've made along the way. Bryce Dallas Howard ("Spider-Man 3") tapped Alfred Molina for her directorial debut, "Orchids," which she co-wrote with Dane Charbeneau. "I remember when she couched it to me, I said it sounds like the perfect gig," said Molina, who had met Howard on the set of "As You Like It." "One day's rehearsal, one day's shooting, and all the bagels you can eat -- it's like an actor's dream."
Jennifer Aniston, who co-directed "Room 10," approached Robin Wright Penn through their mutual talent agency. "And I instantly wanted to do something with her, not ever having met her," Penn said. "I just always loved her from the show." (That would be "Friends," in case anyone's forgotten.)
The other draw of shorts are that they're, well, short, usually taking only a few days to shoot.
"From an actor's point of view, it's actually easier in a way, because there's very little downtime, so you're either working all the time or you do your bit and you're done," said Molina, adding that the experience was "great fun -- you get treated like the crown jewels."
"Everything just flowed, there was no on-set tension," Penn said. "Mind you, we only shot for three days, but it's still pretty rare to not have that. It felt really sweet and warm."
The actors agreed that the work itself didn't differ much from other jobs. "Outside of the size of the trailer, the process is exactly the same," said Joe Mantegna, who performed in his friend Paul Carafotes' short "Club Soda," along with James Gandolfini and Louis Gossett Jr. "The director says 'action' and he says 'cut.' For everything in between, I don't do anything differently if I'm making a movie that's shot in a day for 10 cents or a movie that's shot over six months for a hundred million dollars."
And while a star's participation certainly raises a short's profile, festival director Darryl Macdonald insists it really doesn't influence festival programmers.
"I won't deny that it captures our attention," he said, "but we're not going to book a bad short film simply because it has a name actor in it."

Room 10 is a great short. Any mentionings of her being there today? |

Shortfest is worth your time
Manny the Movie Guy Special to The Desert Post Weekly August 23, 2007
http://www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070823/EVENTS16/708230349
The beauty of short films is the genre's innate ability to capture life as we know it. Filmmakers can have fun with the art form, yet the challenge is to be succinct.
This year's crop of movies at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films ranges from gritty documentaries to vanity projects by major film stars. They're all good and they're all worth your time.
Two short films that are garnering major buzz are the ones directed by A-list stars such as Bryce Dallas Howard ("Spider-Man 3," "The Village") and Jennifer Aniston. Both of their movies, Howard's "Orchids" and Aniston's "Room 10," are part of Glamour Magazine's "Reel Moments" series and were funded by Cartier and FilmAid.
"Orchids" tells the tale of Beatrice (Katherine Waterston), an amateur photographer who befriends Cliff (Alfred Molina), a wealthy, middle-aged eccentric with a deep dark secret. It's now up to Beatrice to help Cliff conquer his fears and insecurities.
Howard, who also co-wrote the film with Dane Charbeneau, showcases her auteur eye. She has the makings of a great director, possibly following the footsteps of her filmmaker dad, Ron Howard. The way the narrative is told, each character's layers are slowly peeled away until you surrender to the film. Don't miss "Orchids."
Another film in the festival's Star Power series (Sunday, August 26, 5:30pm) is Aniston's "Room 10." Our favorite "Friends" girl co-directs this thought-provoking film with Andrea Buchanan.
Based on Glamour reader Colleen Goldrick's real-life story, "Room 10" stars Robin Wright Penn as an E.R. nurse who learns the unmistakable power of love from a patient's husband in room 10.
The husband is wonderfully played by Kris Kristofferson. His wife of 45 years is slowly dying, and he can't do anything about it. "Sometimes you just get tired of being married," he despairingly says to Penn, and Kristofferson utters those lines with bravado - a delivery both sad and haunting.
Winner of the Jury Prize at the CineVegas International Film Festival, "Room 10" will make you shed a tear or two, and will have you wishing for more in-depth films from Aniston.
The movie that truly made me cry, and received my full support is the searing documentary called "Freeheld." A multi-award winning film (it won the Short Filmmaking Special Jury Prize at Sundance this year) directed by Cynthia Wade, you will never be able to take your eyes off of the screen.
"Freeheld" documents the last days of Lieutenant Laurel Hester. She was dying from lung cancer, and all she wanted to do was leave her pension benefits to her life partner, Stacie.
But Ocean County in New Jersey would not honor this privilege. Same-sex domestic partners were frowned upon by the five Republican county freeholders, who were voting against the proposal.
With hundreds of supporters behind her, Hester's riveting story rose to national attention, but director Wade was wise enough to capture the human side of her struggle - one woman's fight to provide for the love of her life. Try to catch this indelible portrait (American Life category, Saturday, Aug. 25th at 3pm).
If fluffy animation is your idea for short films, there are a lot of movies to choose from! Under the Animation Celebration banner (Saturday, Aug. 25th at 10:30am), you can enjoy a movie called "Madame Tutli-Putli," an animated short from Canada which truly deserves the term, artistic tour-de-force!
I always look forward to this time of year, when the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films arrives in the valley. So catch a short film, and learn a thing or two about life as we know it.
Okay guys-Room 10 is showing Sunday-August 26th in the Star Power Series is at 5:30PM...if you live nearby go to see it on the big screen!!! |
