I understand where the complaints are coming from but I think they fail to realize that just because a film is shot at a certain location doesn't automatically mean only local talent and crew will be used.
Central Oregon Filmmakers Unhappy With 'Management'
By Ethan Lindsey
Bend, OR November 20, 2007 4:34 p.m.
Jennifer Aniston has wrapped up her filming work in Madras, after three weeks spent shooting the movie 'Management'.
The film left many residents star-struck and abuzz over the small city's time on the big screen. But as central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports, not everyone is happy.
The Hollywood film made paparazzi out of passersby in Madras this month.
Former 'Friends' star Jennifer Aniston and the movie's production crew filmed for days at Sonny's Motel on Highway 97.
Many in the area say they've gotten to check out the actress, either during the film shoot, or when she's shopped or dined at local shops.
The Madras Chamber of Commerce says, more importantly, the film will bring $2 million to the state. The Oregon Film & Video Office says the state's growing movie industry generates almost a billion dollars annually.
Steve Oster is the executive director of the state film office. He says Aniston's project, 'Management', is shot entirely in Oregon.
Steve Oster: Just looking at it on an economic level, it's been a very positive thing for the state.
But that's not enough, say many Oregonians.
Craig Richards is an actor, who moved to Bend a few years ago. He auditioned for a role in 'Management', but wasn't cast. He says his disappointment with the film isn't just sour grapes -- practically no one working on the film is local.
Craig Richards: We consider 'Management' a great opportunity to put Central Oregon on the map, but a missed opportunity to show filmmakers what this area can contribute to their products.
Richards isn't the only relative newcomer. Population estimates say about 55,000 people have moved to central Oregon since 2000, a large percentage from southern California.
Richards says there's now a growing group of film professionals east of the Cascades.
Craig Richards: I know I'm from Southern California where I worked in film and television. And maybe its just what my ear is tuned to, but most of the people I encounter are from southern California and Los Angeles."
Take Stan Roach for another example. He's a business consultant and an aspiring actor in Bend.
Stan Roach: The 'Management' crew is not a central Oregon crew, the actors are not from central Oregon. There was an extras call here that was somewhat limited. So it's a good example of here we are in central Oregon with all this wonderful talent and resources and yet 'Management' just up the road is using people from out of town.
That's why Richards and Roach helped form the 'Film Oregon Alliance'. They're hoping to raise $10,000 to fund the nonprofit lobbying group.
FILM OREGON COMMERCIAL: We need your help to bring films here.
Until recently central Oregon was an afterthought for Hollywood, says Roach.
Stan Roach: A lot of people in southern California think of Oregon as this wet, rainy place. And what they don't realize is that on the eastside of the Cascades there's plenty of sunshine, and an amazing amount of scenery and settings and locations.
Oregon is trying to use that to grab a larger piece of the Hollywood pie. Like Canada, New Mexico, and many other places, the state now gives a big tax rebate to movie productions.
State film office director Steve Oster says this year is shaping up to be about 25-percent better than last in terms of movie money.
And Oster says central Oregon's geography gives the state just another pitch to bring movies like 'Management' here.
Steve Oster: For this one, it was all about finding the looks. And that's the great thing about Oregon's topography. We can go from coast to mountains to desert to plains, all within a few hours. And that's actually a big plus for us here in terms of growing the industry.
Central Oregon actors say they wish Oster and the state's film board had pushed for more locals to be cast in 'Management'.
But they say now that they've organized, the state's film industry is paying attention and Stan Roach for one hopes it'll do better next time.
Stan Roach: If the folks producing 'Management' had known about us, I'm sure that some of the folks out here would be employed right now in that production.
One thing movie production people hate is unexpected weather.
So, when it started raining and snowing in Madras this week, the film crew decided to wrap things up.
The movie will continue shooting in Portland in December. |

| I saw that too. I also see where perhaps they're disappointed, but it is pretty clear that it's not an intentional oversight. My experience has been that to get the big projects, you do have to pursue them rather proactively, and it does seem that this is a lesson that many have learned the hard way. I'm not sure how much information local talent had beforehand, but ultimately, the powers that be only did what they had to in order to make sure every need was filled. |

Quote: Reed neighborhood again goes Hollywood for a day
By David F. Ashton
The Bee, Nov 22, 2007
The movies stars were well hidden away but tons of movie-making gear was visible along S.E .34th Avenue in the Reed Neighborhood. (Photo by David F. Ashton)
David F. Ashton / THE BEE
When the forthcoming motion picture Management was filming in the Reed neighborhood on October 30th, trucks full of moviemaking equipment lined the streets near the intersection of S.E. 34th Avenue and Raymond Street.
Electric power generators whirred, workers scurried about carrying lights and stands, and caterers were standing by to feed the multitude.
However, none of the neighbors with whom we spoke managed to catch a glimpse of either of the motion pictures stars, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zhan.
Bud Frimoth, a Reed neighbor since 1993, who lives a few houses away from the home used for the shoot, admitted, though, I dont think Id recognize Jennifer Aniston if I did see her.
When we visited Frimoth at his home a few days after the production had come and left, we saw hed indeed had a front-row view of the production from his living room.
About two days in advance, Frimoth told us, A young woman came by and told us that a motion picture production crew was going to be filming in the area.
On October 29th, at about 10 pm, trucks and semi-trailers started to arrive and line the residential street. A big electric power generator started up and ran all that night and into their actual filming day, October 30th.
They set up their gear, Frimoth said, Went about their business, and were, overall, very pleasant. The only problem is that people use S.E. Raymond as a through street. At the intersection of S.E. 34th Avenue, there were two big trucks parked along there.
On the day of the shoot, wed arranged to meet with the Unit Publicist, Guy Adan. As we walked to the brown, ranch-style ranch house on S.E. 34th Avenue being used as the days set, Adan gave us some details about the movie under production, Management.
He said that the Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Temple Hill Productions film, slated to be released in 2008, is a romantic comedy about a traveling saleswoman of corporate art (Aniston) who has a chance encounter with a young man who is stuck managing his parents roadside motel (Zhan). He follows her, resulting in a surprising cross-country relationship.
We snap our photos of the production, and then are escorted off the block.
That evening, Frimoth said, he stepped into his front yard to take his own snapshot of the production and a security guard rushed up and told him he couldnt take pictures. Im standing in my own yard, Frimoth reminded the guard, and, Im the one that brought you cookies this afternoon! They were OK with it all.
Originally, the production company told neighbors theyd wrap the production by 11:30 p.m. But, reflected Frimoth, When I went out about 10:30 pm, they were gone just like they were never here.

Quote: Movie cast, crew wind up filming
$10 million movie benefits economy
Wyck Godfrey, the producer of "The Management," talks to a group of first-graders at Metolius Elementary Nov. 16.
By Holly M. Gill
Two weeks after the start of filming, the cast and crew of "The Management" packed up on Monday and left town, a couple days short of their original timeline.
Weather prevented one last scene from being filmed at the Madras Airport. Instead, the airport scene was expected to be filmed at the airport in Molalla.
In spite of the rain that rolled in over the weekend, producer Wyck Godfrey, of Los Angeles, said that overall, they were pleasantly surprised by the weather. "Considering what we were expecting when we came to shoot a movie in Oregon, we really lucked out," he said.
Ostensibly set in Kingman, Ariz., Aberdeen, Wash., and in the suburbs outside Baltimore, Md., the entire movie was actually shot in Oregon. "It's always cheaper to shoot a movie in one state," Godfrey said, noting that Oregon offered a tax rebate which will bring down the cost of the movie.
For the two weeks that the 100-plus members of the cast and crew were in Madras, Sonny's Motel was transformed into The Kingman Motor Inn.
Godfrey explained that they "bought out" the motel, "so any rooms we're not using for shooting or storing, we have people staying in."
The set was secured with a 15-person Metro Watch security force, hired from Vancouver, Wash. Officers kept paparazzi, curiosity seekers and others off the closed set. The closest they could get to the action was the sidewalk on the west side of Apple Peddler.
Just north of the Bi-Mart Shopping Center, trailers were set up in a circle, surrounded by hay bales -- stacked up to block wind and ensure privacy -- in the rented parking lot.
Even the hillside across U.S. Highway 97 from Sonny's was rented, to keep away the gawking public, and paparazzi, who followed one of the movie's stars, Jennifer Aniston, up from Los Angeles.
"It was certainly a hassle, nonstop," said Godfrey, noting that he would hate to be harassed like Aniston. "There's a big bonus to being behind the camera."
Traffic on U.S. 97 was controlled by flaggers provided by the production company, according to Peter Murphy, public information officer for the Bend office of the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Like other events that disrupt traffic, the production of the movie required a permit, which his department tried to accommodate.
"We want to be perceived as partners with people who want to come to Oregon to do business," he commented.
Although the company has nearly finished shooting the movie, editing will likely continue into May, Godfrey said, with the first showing of the film at "one of the fall film festivals -- Toronto or New York."
"It will probably be released next October, November, or December," he said. "It usually takes about a year from finishing the film to seeing it in theaters."
About 100 local people were hired to take part in the filming. "That's been fun," Godfrey said. "The entire shoot has gone remarkably smoothly. Everybody has had a good time."
The film is a romantic comedy about an antiques saleswoman (Aniston) who travels around the country and meets the owner of a small motel ( Steve Zahn), who falls in love with her and pursues her cross-country.
"Mike, the character that Steve Zahn plays, just has this optimism in the face of all these obstacles he comes against in trying to pursue this woman, who, by all intents, wants nothing to do with him," Godfrey explained. "Yet he perseveres and he keeps a good attitude about him."
"I like to make films that have positive values, are kind of fun and optimistic and uplifting," said Godfrey, who also produced "Daddy Day Care," "I Robot," "Flight of the Phoenix," and "Alien Vs. Predator."
Most recently, he produced "The Nativity Story," and "Eragon," both of which came out at Christmastime in 2006.
Hometown similar to Madras
Godfrey grew up in a small town in Tennessee "that is not dissimilar to Madras." He graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English, and then moved to New York for an internship with New Line Cinema.
"I just started there reading screen plays for them and writing them up for the executives there, doing whatever, making copies -- any odd jobs they wanted -- and eventually, kind of worked my way up, and moved to Los Angeles and worked with them on some of their older (movies), `The Mask,' `Dumb and Dumber,' and the `Nightmare on Elm Street' movies," he recalled.
He counseled young people interested in moviemaking to continue "reading stories and reading books and learning to appreciate narrative."
Magazine claims false
Godfrey countered a story in a national movie magazine that claimed that Aniston was "upset and lonely."
Aniston, who stayed at the Inn at Cross Keys Station, along with other members of the cast, had a good time in Madras, he pointed out.
"The crew has had a fantastic time," he said. "I mean every night, they have gone to ... Silverado, the bowling alley three times, eaten at Mazatlan, Ding Ho, Mexico City."
The cast and crew enjoyed the local Mexican food, he said, and ate at Mexico City regularly. "We ate there almost every night," he said, adding that Aniston even signed a few autographs there.
Besides visiting restaurants and lounges, the cast spent money at grocery and hardware stores, gas stations, the liquor store -- all over the community.
"They had a terrific impact and I know that they had a terrific time," said Holli Van Wert, executive director of the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. "They were well received and treated well."
Van Wert expects to receive followup information on the economic impact of the local filming from the Oregon Film and Video Office within the next few weeks.
Godfrey said he would consider the Madras community for future films. "The people of the town have been extraordinarily open and sweet," he said. "They made the stay wonderful."
Van Wert echoed his sentiments. "I can't wait for the next movie," she said. |

celebsSTAR MAGAZINE, YOU'RE ON NOTICE!
It's one thing for the celeb mags to plaster paparazzi pics of Jennifer Aniston all over their covers. But when they start insulting our fair state, well, that's going too far! I'm referring to a recent, typically ridiculous edition of Star magazine, which splashed a photo of Aniston -- who's been in Portland and Madras filming the romantic comedy "Management" -- above a hysterical headline ("Jen Breaks Down!"). In addition to the usual nonsense was this cover line: "Tearful nights alone on set in Oregon." So I flip inside, and what do I find? Major Madras dissing. According to "an insider," "Portland was bad enough, but now she's in Madras, which she feels like is the end of the earth." Hey, Star magazine, don't mess with Madras! Some of those central Oregonians carry firearms, know what I mean?

Quote: Kimmel films makes Canada deal
Equinoxe will distribute films in all media
By DIANE GARRETT
Kimmel Intl. has inked a two-year Canuck distribution deal with Equinoxe Films.
Under the pact, Montreal-based Equinoxe will distribute all Kimmel Intl. films in all media -- theatrical, pay and free TV and homevid -- in English and French in the country. Agreement covers Sidney Kimmel Entertainment production and Kimmel Intl. acquisitions.
Among the upcoming pics: "Management," a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, Steve Zahn and Woody Harrelson; "All God's Children Can Dance," starring Joan Chen; and "Ye Olde Times," a comedy set at a Renaissance Faire starring Jack Black.
Earlier this year, Equinoxe inked a deal to distribute three SKE films in Canada: "Lars and the Real Girl"; "Married Life," which Sony Classics will distribute Stateside next year; and "Charlie Bartlett," a comedy about a high school teenager that MGM will release in the U.S. in February.
Equinoxe produces films and TV projects and distributes films in theaters and on TV and homevideo. Kimmel Intl. was formed in 2005 as an international sales arm for features. It also acquires third-party projects.

Big Pimpin in the OC
November 30th, 2007
Reader of this blog may not be aware of the fact I switched jobs recently. Ive forsaken the non-profit world for something new: Im now working for a small technology company in Oregon City. The OC is an odd place. Its the only city in Oregon with a municipal elevator actually, its the only municipal elevator in the U.S. I ride it every day to and from work, since the company parking lot is in upper OC and our building d in the central business district.
The muni elevator in the OC is looks very space age, owing to it being built in 1952. Read all about the history of the elevator here.
Hollywood came to the OC last week for the filming of the new Jennifer Aniston movie Managment. My office is directly to the left of the moivie lights. They had all their grip crap in front of our door, so getting in and out of the building for three days was a complete hassle. Not sure why it took three days to film one scene maybe the director fancies himself the next David Lean
Here is all the grip stuff in front of our building. Never saw Jennifer Aniston. I think she had as already left Oregon. I did see a guy who looked like Steve Zahn. One of my new co-workers got a picture of himself w/ Woody Harrelson though.
The OC offers an odd assortment of downtown bussiness. It pretty much alternates dive bar/hobby shop/dive bar. But who shops in the these places? I never see anyone in any of the hobby shops
This hobby shop intrigues me because of all the old video games systems they have in the window. But like a lot of second hand stores here in Oregon, everything seems to be about twice as much as it is on eBay |

Three more cast members have been added to Management on IMDB:
Kimberly Howard as Colleague
Moreen Littrell as Colleague #2
John San Nicolas as Steve McQueen
I assume THE Steve McQueen. This movie is sounding better and better. |

Hollywood dines in Oregon City
Flick starring Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, tapes at New Hings
By Aaron Breniman
The Oregon City News, Dec 4, 2007
Hollywood descended on Oregon City last week, as a production crew rolled into town to tape portions of the upcoming Jennifer Aniston and Woody Harrelson movie Management.
The film took over New Hings restaurant on Main Street for five days last week.
Owner John Chen, who also played a chef in one of the scenes, they, said they put in some long days.
Fifteen hours a day, he said. Great experience, it was a lot of fun. It made me get up early, but it was fun.
Only one of the movies top stars, Harrelson, was in Oregon City for the taping. The movie also features Steve Zahn, who co-starred in Saving Silverman.
Chen was ecstatic over the experience. He said he was approached about a month ago to be a part of the project. While he had to close and work a few long days, he got money, new paint in the restaurant, new light fixtures and a keepsake photo of Harrelson, Chen and one of his bartenders for the restaurant.
While the directors kept telling Chen that Aniston was going to be at the restaurant for filming, she didnt make it. He had to settle for an autographed photo of Aniston signed To Hings.
While residents may recognize the interior of the restaurant in the film, they shouldnt expect any recognition for the area. Unlike other movies that have been set and filmed in Oregon think The Hunted scenes along the Willamette River Management is actually set in Aberdeen, Wash. The tiny coastal town is set along Grays Harbor, an hour west of Olympia.
A majority of the filming for the Stephen Belber written-and-directed movie is actually being done in Central Oregons Madras, though a few scenes were shot in Portland.
Steve Oster, director of Oregon Film and Video Office, said Management production crews were in the Portland area filming for almost two months.
One of the more detailed shoots occurred in Tualatin, where crews descended on Tualatin Indoor Soccer and CI Bar & Grill to shoot scenes for the movie.
A synopsis listed on the production company Sidney Kimmel Entertainments Web site describes Management as a romantic comedy starring Aniston and Zahn.
The movie centers on Anistons character, an uptight, overworked traveling saleswoman of hotel art, who ends up in a roadside motel managed by Zahns character, an underachieving, lonely man who still lives with his parents.
The two characters end up having an unexpected affair. And while Anistons character returns to her life as a workaholic, Zahns character cant forget her and decides to pursue her. What follows is a series of unlikely and hysterical misadventures.
