Hollywood Hits Pike Place
The Market's abuzz lately because there's a major Hollywood movie, "Traveling," that's going to be shooting some scenes at our very own Pike Place Market this Wednesday, the 12th. I hear it's some sort of (I'm guessing) romantic movie with Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart that's going to be filming that day, and Hollywood will be doing funky things with Pike Place Ave like making it a "two-way" street for a short time, and having big rain-making machines lurking around.

Movie crews to close streets around Pike Place Market today
By KATHY MULADY
P-I REPORTER

Last updated 8:57 a.m. PT

A taxi is stuck in traffic. The fruststrated passenger jumps out and starts walking to his hotel, only to have a sudden rainstorm force him back to the cab. Through it all, the Pike Place Market sign glows in the background.

Where but Seattle?

Crews are shooting backgrounds and various scenes Wednesday for "Traveling," a movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaran Eckhart in Seattle this week.

From about 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., filming will be done around the Market and Post Street Alley. Virginia Street at Western Avenue and First Avenue will be closed most of the day, and about two blocks at the Market will be closed in the morning.

Cranes will be used to help create the Seattle rain effect, in case the real stuff doesn't materialize. A traffic jam will also be manufactured.

Most of the movie, which takes place in Seattle, was filmed in Vancouver, B.C., but key Seattle backdrops are being filmed around the Puget Sound region this week. .

"Traveling" is about a self-help guru who comes to Seattle for a workshop. The guy can't help himself until he meets a quirky florist, played by Aniston.

The bubbly actress isn't in Seattle this week, said a publicist for Universal Pictures.

Thanks for the tidbit!

Yeah, I'd pretty much figured that she was done with her part :)

Edit: The Seattlest had this:

Quote:
After Seattlest arrived at the office today, saw all of these big white trailers across the street, and had our little "Well, this is unusual" moment of tilted equilibrium, we got curious. Is this another episode of our friendly German invasion of last August?

Not so, apparently. We asked the security guard in our lobby if he knew what was up. He said, "They're going to shoot a movie today." Then he smiled and said, "Jennifer Aniston is here."

Recalling that our security guard is a known liar, we wrinkled our face and moved on to quiz our co-workers.

"Did you hear?" one said. "Jennifer Aniston is shooting a movie at the market today." Two others confirmed the rumor. One guy said he heard it not from the lying security guard, but from the news. "Where on the news, did you hear it?" I asked. "Oh, I don't know. The radio. Or maybe it was on TV."

So there you have it Seattle. According to our security guard and three of our co-workers, the beautiful and talented Jennifer Aniston is shooting a movie at Pike Place Market today.

Can anyone confirm this? We'll do our best to stay on top of it without getting fired or breaking our restraining order. (Is it our fault that she came here?)

I still think it's probably one of Aaron's scenes without her; like the article said, security guards are notorious liars, and she's in Miami.

Here's a video from the Seattle set of Traveling. Aaron is there. They talk about jennifer being busy filming in Miami and how they managed to make her look like she was in those scenes.

Thanks Irina. lmao at teh guy who didn't know what was going on but ended up as an extra. So the "sightings" of Jennifer was just her body double and she will be added by green screen. That will be interesting to see how those scenes turn out. I assume there is a reason Aaron's hair is lighter now than when they were in Vancouver.

Jennifer Aniston? JONIFER'S the funny one...
So, Hollywood, filming Jennifer Aniston's upcoming movie "Traveling," did indeed grace Pike Place last week and, according to the Market vendors, the whole thing was relatively uneventful. I polled a few crafters who said that foot traffic hadn't been particularly affected, and overall sales hadn't inclined or declined as their idle imagingings had unskillfully speculated.

Isn't that how it always goes?

I was surprised and pleased to hear that the production company had offered $100.00 to any vendor willing to stay until 7:00 p.m. that day, which I'm sure was helpful for those who had indeed been slow. For whatever reason. The businesses who chose to stay were lined up near each other in the northern part of the Market, and will probably function as "colorful local glimpses" in the finished movie.

The media had a ball with their footage of the afternoon's goings-on, although I noticed I'd blogged about it before the rest of the papers started sounding off.

One thing that struck me as very funny was a brief T.V. interview I'd seen of Jennifer Aniston's body double, who in this particular case was a woman from Tacoma. I didn't catch her name. We'll say it was "Jonifer Anoston." In the interview, and looking a little shell-shocked I might add, Jonifer was relating how stunned she'd been to "get the call" from the production company. It was all very exciting , she said. I laughed and inferred that there must be lots of Aniston doubles, perhaps all over the place.

'Traveling' co-writer tells why Jen Aniston film was set in Seattle
Last week we told you about the cast and crew that came to Seattle to film scenes for the upcoming flick, "Traveling." Today I asked co-writer and Seattle area resident Mike Thompson how the Emerald City emerged as the backdrop to his romantic drama.

Movie producer and co-writer Mike Thompson of Seattle watches the filming of "Traveling" on a monitor at the corner of Virginia Street and Pike Place in Seattle March 12, 2008. (Meryl Schenker/Seattle Post-Intelligencer).
Here's what Thompson had to say about his favorite Seattle landmark, why Portland just didn't make the cut and how star Jennifer Aniston could be at the gum wall without ever walking down Post Alley:

Big Blog: So why did you decide to set 'Traveling' in Seattle?

Mike Thompson: When we (he and co-writer and director Brandon Camp) were writing the movie we sort of established this concept of a guy on a business trip -- hence the title "Traveling" -- and how our lives change when we're traveling. Going down that road, we had to pick a destination. We wanted the city to be a character in the movie, to have a unique quality, kind of like in "Lost in Translation."

I live in Seattle, and obviously I think it's the greatest town in the world. It's easy for me to make that suggestion, but my partner agreed that it had a certain uniqueness to it we could exploit. As we wrote the script, we tried to tell the underground Seattle tale as opposed to the obvious postcard tale.

BB: What locations fit that mold for you?

MT: The gum wall, the Fremont troll, the Lake View Cemetery (Capitol Hill) where Bruce and Brandon Lee are buried -- I also had some experience here in Seattle at hookah bars before they outlawed smoking and at slam poetry events. The hookah bar (in the movie) doesn't exist, but we fictionalized it.

BB: What happens there?

Much of these locations I was rattling off are part of a night walk, so Jennifer Aniston's character and Aaron Eckhart's character are at a hookah bar watching Aniston's character's friend do slam poetry (inspired by shows Thompson saw at the Mirabeau Room in Queen Anne). They all have drinks, whoop it up, then it's a music montage of a walking tour of Seattle that she takes him on. They pass by all these places, one of places they pass by is gum wall. They stop by the troll and mess around there, then stop by the cemetery. It's part of a five-minute music montage.

BB: You said Jennifer Aniston couldn't make it to Seattle because she was in Miami filming Marley and Me. How is she still a part of the night walk?

MT: We literally planned from the beginning how to integrate her in Seattle. We fabricated a gum wall in Vancouver so we could shoot the two of them in a two-shot in front of it. We shot Aaron Eckhart and Judy Greer and a photo double for Jennifer (in Seattle).

We did the same thing at the troll. In Vancouver we shot her whole body in front of green screen. We have a wide shot of a group staring up at the troll, and we'll literally insert her body in between them.

Also, we shot a two-shot of her and Aaron in front of Vancouver, under the 99 bridge, where there are the big giant columns. We built one of the big giant columns in Vancouver and shot them in front of it. We did the same thing at Bruce and Brandon Lee's graves -- replicated those in Vancouver and shot them there.

BB: You were saying that traveling can really change people. What about Seattle can do that to someone?

MT: Having lived here my whole life and knowing people here and having the same group of great friends and people for decades, there's a certain communal quality to the people here and an openness and friendliness and no b.s. approach to talking about oneself and self analysis and what have you. This character of Jennifer Aniston's is the first person in his life, for three years, who has not really allowed him to avoid confronting his issues. For me, personally, that comes from my feeling of Seattle people and it just felt that Seattle that would serve that character.

BB: You said Camp is from Dallas. Did you consider any other cities before settling on Seattle?

MT: We've written lots of things set in different cities and try not to repeat ourselves, though the TV series "John Doe" was set in Seattle. We thought about Portland a few minutes, but we decided it wasn't quite large enough. We talked about Chicago for a minutes, but ultimately decided Chicago had been a little overexposed.

BB: How was the Seattle shoot?

MT: We spent 40 days shooting in Vancouver. Vancouver's become Hollywood north -- you forget you're shooting a big movie there. 'Cause in Pike Place Market everyone on the cast and crew was remarking and marveling at how excited people were, coming down and taking pictures. The experience of a movie being shot in their beloved city made our experience fulfilling ... we remembered how exciting it is.

BB: Of all those Seattle locations you included in the movie, which is your favorite?

MT: The troll. I spend most of my time going out with friends in Fremont, so the troll is really it.

Screenwriter Mike Thompson grew up in Bellevue, lives in Bryn Mawr, south of Seattle, and has co-written scripts for film and TV with writing partner Brandon Camp for 14 years. For more about Thompson and his previous work, check out his page on the Internet Movie Database.

^ It is but I guess knowing Jennifer from romantic comedies and Friends and Aaron from No Reservations makes you think that's the only possible genre they might star in.

But what exactly does that tidbit mean? That Focus Film Intl. owns Traveling and they're trying to sell it? Or they have yet to sell it?
