7 teens killed in Bathurst, NB road accident
Quote: A deadly road crash in New Brunswick, Canada has claimed the lives of eight people near the city of Bathurst on Saturday. A van carrying 12 people was returning from a school basketball game in Moncton when it slid on an icy highway and collided with a semi-trailer truck.
Of the dead, seven were members of the Bathurst High School boys basketball team and the other was a teacher, the van driver's wife. The survivors are three teammates and a coach who was driving the van, all of whom were hospitalised at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst. The driver of the semi-trailer was uninjured. The crash occurred on New Brunswick Route 8 as it approached the junction with Route 11 into Bathurst.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed his shock and condolences, describing the tragedy as "unthinkable". New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham also expressed his condolences.
This tragedy is so sad. The accident happened 5 mins away from the local McDonalds where a lot of the parents were waiting on thier boys safe return. The coach who was driving the van lost his wife as well. I believe there will be some major changes in the sport world when it comes to transporting teams due to this tragedy. My thoughts & prayers go out to the families.
Bathurst is only a 3 hrs drive away from the city I live in the whole province is in mourning |

Thank you Kathy, that means a lot. They were saying on the news that the public funeral was held today in Bathurst & they couldnt get everyone into the arena, one lady they interviewed said she walked 7km (not sure what that is in miles) just to pay her respects.
Bathurst is a very small town so everyone knows someone who was effected by this. |

Jesus, how sad. I was already down because I heard my 12 year old neighboor died in a car accident. He went well on school and his brothers didn't, so he was the only one who got the trip to see a game and died on the way back the same way.
My condolences to all these families... I hope there will be changes indeed. |

Well it seems that things are changing already as of this am. We had a snowstorm lastnight & got about 15-20 cm of snow (thats about 6-8 inches for my US friends). The roads were clear this morning, but in light of the accident School was canceled today. People just arent taking any chances with the roads right now.
not to upset anyone but here is a pic of the van ..... ANYONE who has these 12 passenger vans PLEASE GET RID OF THEM if you can They are a death trap

| Debby, it is just a terrible story, we have been seeing a lot of coverage of it in Saskatchewan. Just so sad for those left behind. |
