'Marley' bites into Christmas day box office
02:11 PM PT, Dec 26 2008
Christmas has gone to the dogs ... at least at the cineplex.

First-day box office estimates are in, and it looks like in the battle of Jennifer Aniston versus ex-husband Brad Pitt, Aniston's record-breaking "Marley & Me" wins by a puppy's tail.

The Owen Wilson-Aniston vehicle took in $14.6 million (A Christmas Day record), while award-nomination darling "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" followed in second with $11.7 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Slashfilm.com estimates "Marley & Me's" holiday weekend haul to be in the ballpark of $56 million while "Button" is expected to ring up $45 million in ticket sales. Third-place finisher "Bedtime Stories" may have split some of Adam Sandler's male audience with Tom Cruise's fourth-place "Valkyrie." The Christmas Day top 10 estimates are:

1. MARLEY AND ME
Fox - playing on 3,480 screens
$14,600,000

2. THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Paramount - 2,988
$11,700,000

3. BEDTIME STORIES
Buena Vista - 3,681
$10,325,000

4. VALKYRIE
United Artists - 2,711
$8,350,000

5. YES MAN
Warner Bros. - 3,434
$3,610,321

6. SEVEN POUNDS
Sony / Columbia - 2,758
$2,310,779

7. THE SPIRIT
Lionsgate - 2,509
$3,825,000

8. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (2008)
Fox - 2,402
$1,782,139

9. FOUR CHRISTMASES
Warner Bros. (New Line) - 2,510
$1,568,404

10. THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX
Universal - 3,104
$2,483,145

Really? One the one hand, I'm happy, but on the other hand, I feel bad that you didn't get to see it. Did you try to purchase your tickets online?

Marley Hanging Tight on Number One Position. Deadline Hollywood Update as of 5PM PST, 8PM EST today, Friday.

BEST DOGGONE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND! 'Marley & Me' #1, 'Bedtime Stories' #2, 'Benjamin Button' #3, 'Valkyrie' #4
FRIDAY 5 PM UPDATE: Family fare is what post-holiday moviegoers want today. But overall attendance is down after an enormous Christmas Day at the box office. Midday numbers show Fox's Marley & Me easily holding onto No. 1. Not surpisingly, Disney's Bedtime Stories moves up into 2nd place thanks to kiddie matinees kicking in. Paramount's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button slides down to #3, and MGM/UA's Valkyrie sticks at #4. Children keep seeing Universal's The Tale Of Despereaux for No. 5. Sony's Seven Pounds holds onto 6th. And Warner Bros' Yes Man clings to #7. Stay tuned.

Marley's Number 1 For Friday Night. Deadline Hollywood. 10 PM PST.

BEST DOGGONE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND! Friday: 'Marley & Me' #1, 'Bedtime Stories'/'Benjamin Button' Tied For #2, 'Valkyrie' #4
FRIDAY 10 PM UPDATE: Family fare is what post-holiday moviegoers wanted today. But overall attendance is down after an enormous Christmas Day at the box office. Very early box office numbers show Fox's Marley & Me easily holding onto No. 1 Friday with $14M. Not surpisingly, Disney's Bedtime Stories moves up into 2nd place with $10.2M thanks to kiddie matinees kicking in. But it's neck and neck with Paramount's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button which also logged $10.2M. MGM/UA's Valkyrie sticks at #4 with another $8M. Children packed Universal's The Tale Of Despereaux for the toon to climb 105% for No. 5. Sony's Seven Pounds holds onto 6th. And Warner Bros' Yes Man clings to #7. But Lionsgate's The Spirit is surprisingly DOA despite its comic book roots. "A true wipeout, down around 25% tonight. At around $3 million, it may come in 9th," a rival studio exec tells me.

popsugar I like what they said
Quote:
In many ways, the movie Marley & Me is itself like a sweet little squirmy puppy. It's good natured and earnest, funny and cute. It turns out to be pretty much exactly what you expect if you've seen the trailers and/or read the book on which the movie is based: Literally a story about a crazy, uncontrollable dog whose life impacts a young couple's marriage in unexpected ways.
That said, the movie is often just as much about the protagonist, John Grogan (Owen Wilson) and his relationship with his wife Jennifer (Jennifer Aniston) as it is about the dog. And it's about the sacrifices we make for the ones we love even for the ones we love who are furry and four-legged. Much of the time is spent following this husband and wife as they go through the growing pains of marriage: Finding a home (and then trying to find new homes in better neighborhoods), figuring out what they need professionally, having children, and making decisions about work goals vs. family, etc. etc. It's all very simple and normal, but there's a kind of comfort in that. For more of my thoughts on this, read more.

In terms of the narrative itself, there's nothing new here. Marriage is harder than we thought it would be! Kids are stressful! I wish I had a different job! It's all the same old normal things that most people go through. The main difference is that all the while there's this wacky dog who makes the humans' lives even more complicated but also ultimately more rewarding.
There's something inherently good-humored about watching the crazy antics of a dog. With human drama and relationships there's all the judging that goes on and the complex emotions, but most people really enjoy animals on a basic level so there's a sort of purity to the enjoyment that comes from this movie. However, you can be sure that the dog is used at times to symbolize things for the humans ("Time to let you off your leash . . . hey, I'd like to feel that free, too . . ."). And plenty of scenes are entirely about the human characters. These performances are good but this isn't a movie you see for the performances (though Alan Arkin's portrayal of John's no-nonsense, vaguely paternal boss is consistently a breath of fresh air).Overall, it's just nice to have something so purely good that a whole audience can agree on: That dog is cute and funny. There are plenty of provocative, divisive films in the world and then there's this one that only asks you to relax and have a good time. It's an easygoing movie about things that feel relatable and normal to us. There's no reinvention of the wheel, but what better movie to open around the holidays than one that is so familiar and comforting?

Box Office: Marley & Me Grabs $14M on Friday; Still Headed for $54M
Posted on Friday, December 26th, 2008 at 11:58 pm by: Steve Mason

MARLEY & ME off 3% Friday for $14M, but still headed for $54M; BEN BUTTON & BEDTIME STORIES close for #2 Friday with about just over $10M with both targeting $40M by Monday; VALKYRIE seizes another $8M; REV ROAD, GRAN TORINO and WRESTLER are likely 4-day PTA leaders!

The big box office guns of 2008 were generally down a couple of ticks on Friday. This is counter to the models that I and many box office types were using to project the 4-day weekend numbers. The last time Christmas landed on a Thursday was in 2003, the biggest day of that 4-day frame was Friday. Pictures that year were generally up 15%-20% on Friday, flat or down a few percentage points on Saturday and then down 19%-25% on Sunday. Were seeing something different here.

The answer Im getting from studio honchos is that just because Christmas is on the same day, doesnt mean that pictures will play in the same pattern. It may be that because retail sales were down dramatically during the traditional holiday shopping season, more potential movie-goers rushed out to take advantage of after-holiday deep discounts. Its also possible that more people were working on the day after Christmas because of the rough economy. Job insecurity makes workers less likely to take days off, and that may have contributed to the mild undertow. Then, theres also the fact that 4 movies opened huge on Christmas Day and that there was real anticipation for Marley & Me (Fox), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Paramount), Bedtime Stories (Disney) and Valkyrie (MGM/UA), an a high percentage of people saw their First Choice yesterday.

The lovable dog yarn starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston took a very mild 3% drop to about $14.06M. Benjamin Button was off 14% to an estimated $10.2M, while Bedtime Stories dipped 2% to $10.1M. Meanwhile, the Bryan Singer-directed Tom Cruise epic Valkyrie was down about 5% to a still-strong $8M. So it appears that kid and family-friendly movies held up a bit better than more adult fare like David Finchers Best Picture contender.

Bad news for Lionsgate and its new graphic comic noir tale The Spirit. It took a significant tumble to about $3M down about 21%. Ive adjusted the 4-day for this one to a disappointing $11.91M.

I have made minor adjustments to my 4-Day Estimates, but Saturday could go one of 2 ways. Pictures could be generally flat or off a couple of points Friday-to-Saturday as they were in 2003, or this could play out a little more like a traditional weekend with percentage increases on Saturday. Regardless, Marley & Me will finish in the mid-$50Ms by Monday, Ben Button will likely be a tick above $40M, Bedtime Stories should get to $39M and Valkyrie will probably just clear $30M.

Keep checking back for regular updates and lots more detail about the specialty films, including some important Oscar contenders, in platform release.

What a great Christmas present! I had a feeling M&M would do better than expected; Jen worked her butt off promoting it. Hopefully Saturday numbers are great also!
