Star attractions in festival line-up
ALISON ROWAT January 22 2009
An Oscar-winning legend, a knight of the realm, and a heavyweight champion of the world star in the line-up for the fifth Glasgow Film Festival, unveiled yesterday.
Running from February 12-22, the festival opens with the UK premiere of Glasgow-boy Armando Iannucci's first feature, In the Loop. The Iraq war satire, starring James Gandolfini, of The Sopranos, and Peter Capaldi, attracted rave reviews after its debut at the Sundance film festival in the US this week.
Closing the event is Last Chance Harvey, starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. This year's retrospective is devoted to Audrey Hepburn.
Scottish audiences will have the first chance to see Gran Torino, starring four-time Oscar recipient Clint Eastwood, Jennifer Aniston's shaggy dog tale Marley and Me, the Palme D'or-winning The Class, and Sir Michael Caine as an elderly magician in the drama Is There Anybody There? Tyson, a no-holds barred documentary on the former heavyweight boxing champion, leads the documentary field.
Festival co-director Allan Hunter said: "It says a lot for the festival's growing reputation that we have been able to attract such a high standard of film. We know from the feedback we've received ... just how much they appreciate the enthusiasm of the Glasgow Film Festival audiences and how ready they are to have their films premiere here."
More than 20,000 visitors attended last year's festival.
David Adams McGilp, regional director of VisitScotland, one of the festival's sponsors, said the GFF was proving to be a boon during the winter months.
"Our UK target markets for city breaks have a keen interest in arthouse cinema, and research tells us that 40% of potential visitors will choose their break on the strength of an event or festival."
The Sunday Herald is among the festival's media partners.

| If Jennifer is going----maybe that's why there's an article quoted in J&J Thread that after her supposedly b-day party, she & John are planning a get-a-way till Feb 14th. Just maybe.......they are going together????? |

I'm so glad you got to see it, kat. I'm a four-timer and loved it every time. Was the theater full? What was the reaction of others? |

Threatre was packed full and there was lots of sniffling at the end, I think everyone loved it though. My boyfriend thought it was going to be such a chick flick, but even he was teary at the end! |
