Jennifer Aniston, Tobey Maguire, Meg Ryan! The Fashion Week Party You Wish You Went To

by Meredith Bryan | September 9, 2008

Monday evening, the most celeb-packed event in town may not have been the photographer-infested Marc Jacobs show, but an all-but-unpublicized affair across town that took place concurrentlywe can only assume this was intentional, in hopes that the fashion machine would be otherwise occupiedon far West 31st Street, where David Arquette and Ben Harper were launching their organic clothing line, Propr, at a bash that doubled as Mr. Arquette's birthday party.

There was no red carpet, no flashbulbs. We stepped into the freight elevator, and as it was about to close, in popped Meg Ryan, in jeans and black corduroy blazer. She stood there awkwardly while everyone tried to pretend that Meg Ryan hadn't just stepped into the elevator. (Note: Her face looked much less scary in person than it has in her last few movies).

Upstairs, there was no clothing immediately in evidence, and no models, but there was a buffet featuring macaroni and meatloaf, and a bunch of people milling about sipping red wine, almost none of whom we recognized from other fashion shows this week. Toby Maguire snaked through the crowd, unmolested. Laura Dern, Mr. Harper's wife, chatted with Ms. Ryan. Eventually we glimpsed one photo shoot in progress, in the corner of the loft, directed by Mr. Harper himself. A lone model stood in a red dress against a screen, swaying in a wind machine. After some time she was joined by a man in a plaid shirt. This was a new and interesting way of presenting a clothing line! But clothes weren't really the focus here.

Nearby, a small stage was set up, from which Mr. Harper was to eventually entertain the crowd. Alas, we were late to the Marc Jacobs show. On our way out, the elevator opened and there stood Jennifer Aniston, in jeans, expectant and smiling. Of course!

"Hi!" she cried, and rushed past us into the elevator.

Ana, it was the party to celebrate the launch of David Arquette's and Ben Harper's new men's clothing line called Proper. It was in NYC during Fashion Week (this week) and Jennifer came in from Toronto to help them celebrate. And Happy Birthday Ana.

Aniston deals with press scrutiny

By Tom Brook
Entertainment reporter, BBC News, in Toronto

At this year's Toronto Film Festival, few stars attracted as much attention as the Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston and her ex-husband Brad Pitt.
Jennifer Aniston plays a travelling saleswoman in her new film

The former Friend and her ex-partner never actually crossed paths - but the press was salivating at the thought of a reunion as the pair unveiled their new films.

Pitt, 44, was there to talk up his turn as a dim-witted gym instructor in Burn After Reading, while Aniston was promoting romantic comedy Management.

The actress - whose recent relationship with country star John Mayer was also prime material for the gossip columnists - said she couldn't quite understand why the media were so interested in her private life.

"I have no idea, I have absolutely no idea," she said. "I ask that all the time."

And, despite years of fervent speculation about her salary, boyfriends, domestic life and desire for children, the star maintained she was not fazed by being in the public eye.

Media scrutiny

Instead, these were the thoughts that she said went through her head as she walked the red carpet: "I'm happy to be here; I'm thinking this is surreal; I'm thinking people are so kind, ultimately."

For Aniston, the agenda was to be disciplined, to sell her film in the midst of media scrutiny.

"My priority is my job and my work and doing it to the best of my ability," she said.

"So that's where I focus my attention, doing it as well I can."

The star plays the role of a travelling saleswoman, who catches the eye of a young motel worker, played by Steve Zahn.

They have a brief fling and he becomes smitten but, initially, Aniston's character is not.

At times, the film resembles a caper comedy as he tries to win her over.

Perhaps surprisingly, the movie is a small independent production rather than a glossy, high profile Hollywood picture.

Acting challenge

But it is not Aniston's first foray into indie cinema - she won plaudits for small-town drama The Good Girl in 2002 - and the actress said she had enjoyed the scale of her new film.

She also relished the acting challenge.

"I loved it and I got to sharpen my tools. It's so easy to get stuck doing the same thing people expect you to do," she said.

Aniston has several big-budget productions under her belt, including Bruce Almighty and Along Came Polly, but she said she enjoyed the autonomy that comes with independent films.
Aniston and Pitt divorced in 2005

A film like Management provided "more freedom to creatively be expressive and so it makes it more a labour of love," she said.

With Hollywood movies, as she sees it, commercial pressures rule.

"It's the corporation, it's big money," she said.

Aniston was also cautious about getting sucked into the business of politics - and stressed she was yet to decide whether to endorse a candidate for the upcoming Presidential election.

To her, celebrity endorsement of a politician is "like a celebrity supporting a good cause - the celebrity is just the voice to create awareness around the cause".

And she does not think it is a good idea for people to follow a particular course of action just because she does.

"People who are basing their decisions on what I do is ridiculous," she said.

And, as she would probably admit, Aniston's celebrity has its limitations.

With Management, her star power alone cannot guarantee success.

The climate for independent films has become brutal in America. A small picture needs very strong reviews if it is to survive in cinemas for more than just a few months.

So Management's producers will be hoping the frenzied scenes at its Toronto premiere - where hordes of fans lined the red carpet - can be replicated in movie theatres when the movie is released.

The actress - whose recent relationship with country star John Mayer LOL!!

As for her not deciding on a candidate, she is an Obama supporter. I think she donated to his campaign and is a Democrat.

What she said was that she hadn't endorsed a candidate.

I think she did say Obama was pretty - but don't know if that's an endorsement or not.

Does this mean we're going to see John Mayer on the Grand Ole Opry? I've noticed lately that several UK pubs have called John a country singer.

She is a Obama supporter but she hasn't publically endorsed him. The people who are her fans obviously know she has donated money to his campaign but she hasn't like many others come out and endorsed him.

I think she mentioned Obama was lovely as she along with others came out after attending one of his fundraisers but I could be wrong.

I was reading her Rolling Stone article from '95 the other day and in that she mentioned pretty much the same thing she mentions here about how she doesn't understand the media's intrest in her private life. Things really haven't changed at all. The only difference is it has just got more intense with time.

She did contribute to his campaign and attend the gala, but I think that what she's saying is that she won't make a public statement about her views. Which is a reasonable approach, I think - she made her contribution, and we happen to know about it because it's public record, but as she's said in the past, she doesn't consider herself to be a political expert, simply a citizen.

i agree, i think what she was saying is that her choice is her choice and doesnt feel the need to make a public statment to sway fans to vote for him.

Agreed. I think if she decides to take any part in the upcoming elections (using her celebrity) it would be by doing a PSA, encouraging people to vote, like she did in 2004. In a country where voting is a choice (in mine, it's mandatory for people between 18-65), it's essential that people feel the urge to vote and make a difference.
