Stand Up To Cancer telethon Raises over 100 million!!!!Fantastic news for a powerful event! angel2

Multi-network cancer telethon donations top $100M
By FRAZIER MOORE 1 hour ago

NEW YORK (AP) Spurred by an historic telethon Friday night, viewers stood up to cancer and pushed total donations for research to battle the disease past the $100 million mark.

That dollar figure reflects contributions from viewers of the telethon, "Stand Up to Cancer," as well as money raised since late May, when the Stand Up to Cancer initiative was launched, according to Lisa Paulsen, head of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, the charitable organization behind Stand Up to Cancer.

"One hundred percent of the more than $100 million raised will go directly to funding the research programs necessary to battle this insidious disease," said Paulsen in a statement Sunday that accompanied the announcement.

Research advocates and some 100 stars from music, sports, TV and film came together for Friday's live telethon, simulcast on ABC, CBS and NBC as well as cable's E! Entertainment channel, which provided the program to more than 170 nations and territories worldwide. Viewership figures for the program weren't immediately available.

Reminding the audience that cancer kills 550,000 Americans and six million people worldwide each year, the special was aimed at educating the public on cancer prevention and treatment, as well as raising funds to help fund research in particular, "translational research," which encourages scientists to collaborate rather than compete, translating basic science into applicable therapies for patients with varying cancer afflictions.

Jack Black, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Keanu Reeves along with presidential nominees John McCain and Barack Obama were among the celebrities participating in the hourlong show aired from Los Angeles.

It featured musical segments by performers including James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban and Monica Mancini. Serving as co-emcees, rival network news anchors Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams discussed advances in cancer research. And sitcom star Brad Garrett underwent an on-the-air prostate exam.

Stand Up to Cancer said announcements are forthcoming on how research grants will be distributed. Meanwhile, fundraising will continue by various means, including the organization's Web site.

Jennifer Aniston speaks for the first time about shooting the NBC TV hit '30 Rock,' saying she had an absolute blast, according to ET Canada.

"It was awesome, really, really fun," Aniston said, complementing the '30 Rock' cast members who she calls "stellar." The Emmy-award winning actress spoke to ET Canada while promoting her new film 'Management' at the Toronto Film Festival.

Last week, ET brought you all-new footage of Aniston working a scene on the New York City set of "30 Rock." She joins the show for one episode this fall to play the former roommate of Tina Fey's character Liz Lemon -- who also happens to be stalking Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy!

Speaking about her involvement in the "Stand Up to Cancer" TV benefit Friday night, Aniston said it turned out to be a great event that raised more than $100 dollars. Aniston, 39, said such a telethon makes her feel that a star's celebrity status can have a positive effect if it is used correctly. "We have opportunities. You have to be very careful. You have to be very specific where you use the power of your celebrity."

Jen Aniston: 30 Rock "Was Awesome"
Sunday September 7, 2008

Jennifer Aniston had a blast shooting her guest spot on 30 Rock.

"It was awesome, really, really fun," the actress, 39, told Entertainment Tonight Canada while promoting her new film, Management, at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday.

Aniston will appear on one upcoming episode of the hit NBC sitcom as the former roommate of Tina Fey's character. The role has her playing a "free-spirited, Fatal Attraction-like stalker" of Alec Baldwin's character, the network has said.

The former Friends star described the cast as "stellar."

Aniston also told ET about her involvement in the Stand Up to Cancer telethon that aired Friday night and raised over $100 million for cancer research and causes.

"We have opportunities," she said of using her fame. "You have to be very careful. You have to be very specific where you use the power of your celebrity."

As for 30 Rock, Aniston has at least one fan on the set.

"Jennifer is not only incredibly lovely to have around, she also has what the young people would call 'mad skills.' We're very excited that she's joining us," Fey, who is also the show's creator and executive producer, has said.

ET's interview with Aniston will air Monday, Sept. 8.

Oh God bless her. I am so sorry. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. May God be with you.

You know, there were celebrities on that show that I thought I didn't like - for whatever tabloid garbage I had read or heard about them. How ridiculous. I have a whole new respect level for all who participated.

You are right-she is indeed free of pain ...but I know that it hurts so awfully bad now. Just take comfort in the fact that she is "whole" again...it won't lessen the pain but hon we are praying for you and your family in this difficult time. May God bless you and keep you and your family in his loving arms! angel1
